Possible McCuin of Regency at Creekside Cemetery

Narrative

John Luther McCuin married Mildred Catharine Beaumont, the daughter of James Beaumont and Frances Buckley Beaumont. The Beaumont family moved to Prince William County from nearby Loudoun County in the late 1860's and settled on two parcels of land totaling 55 acres on the north side of Catamount Branch, a mile north of Catharpin. Their farm was bounded on the east by a 160 acre tract owned by James Buckley, the brother of Frances, and on the west by what is now Sanders Lane.

After their marriage in September 1873, John and Mildred McCuin lived on the northern end of the Beaumont family farm and raised 7 children there. In 1885, after the deaths of her parents, Mildred inherited the northern most 8 1/3 acres of the Beaumont farm and her two brothers owned the remainder. John and Mildred lived on the 8 1/3 acre tract until their deaths. In 1909 the McCuin children, as heirs to the property, sold the tract to their cousin William T. Beaumont. Today that tract is GPIN #7400-72-3718 and part of GPIN # 7400-71-3692.

John and Mildred McCuin and a child are believed to have been buried in the McCuin Family Cemetery. The location of the cemetery site has not been found but it might be on the 8 1/3 acre parcel where they lived their lives. At this time, the exact location of the McCuin Family Cemetery is not known.

Narrative provided by local resident Jack Hardgrove, who has done extensive research on the cemetery and McCuin family. - June 2020

It's possible John and Mildred McCuin were buried on property they lived on for many years. View information on that site on the other McCuin Cemetery page.

Prior Information

In E. R. Conner's 1981 book titled 100 Old Cemeteries of Prince William County this cemetery is mentioned in the section titled "Some Vanished Cemeteries of Prince William", on page 186 it reads "McCUIN: Family cem., now unmarked, west of Catharpin Rd. (Rte. 676) on former McCuin place, 0.3 mi. south of intersection with Artemus Rd. (Rte. 704). According to Mrs. Gordon McCuin, two burials are known:
John Luther McCuin, Mar 1, 1845-July 28, 1887
Mildred Catherine Beaumont McCuin, Aug 15, 1845-July 16, 1891."
*NOTE: The death date of John Luther McCuin is believed to be 1907 based on a family bible and 1900 cencus records showing a John Luther McCuin in the area.

It's unknown if this is a cemetery or once was, but the modern McCuin Family seems to think there are family members buried here and the county also believe it's possible there are graves here. Until proven otherwise it must be marked as a possible location of intermed graves.

If there was a cemetery on the farm property which you would think there would be based on the age of the farm and lack of knonwn off-site burials, the most logical place for it to be would be where it's thought to be today, near the large tree. That area seems to have been the highest elevation on the farm, it's always been cleared but not farmed from aerial images that only go back to 1937, 30 years after John McCuin's death. The image below is from 2000, prior to the farm being redeveloped. The red circle indicates the area where a cemetery is thought to be or have been.

Ron Turner 2001 Information on this cemetery from Betty Duley. I did not find the graves and could not find anyone that knew the location.
David Cuff July, 2019 I visited the cemetery at request of neighborhood resident Jack Hardgrove. The graves are not visable. Elizabeth McCuin, who lives south of the development said they believe two adults and one child were buried in the cemetery at the base of the tree. It's believed the tree consummed the graves. Betty Duley provided names in 2001. At the time of Mildred Catherine Beaumont McCuin death, the farm was owned by her father, according to the 1880 census.
